MCP note taking app
By September 2026 most of the serious note apps shipped an MCP server, so "has an MCP server" stopped being the question. The question that is left is narrower and it decides whether the thing is useful to you:
Is the server hosted, or does it run on your own machine?
A local server needs that machine awake. A scheduled agent cannot reach it, a cloud runner cannot reach it, and Claude or ChatGPT on your phone cannot reach it. If you only ever use an agent in a terminal on the same laptop, that is fine and you can stop reading. If you wanted the agent to do something while you were away, it is the whole story.
The table
| App | MCP server | Where it runs | Reads and writes notes | On the free plan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pando | first-party | hosted, OAuth | yes | yes |
| Notion | first-party | hosted, OAuth | yes | not established |
| Tana (the new product) | first-party | hosted, at home.tana.inc/mcp |
not established | yes |
| Craft | first-party, since 12 March 2026 | hosted | writes, scope not established | not established |
| Capacities | first-party | hosted, OAuth 2.1 with PKCE | 13 write tools | not established |
| Reflect | first-party, since 10 March 2026, writes since 28 April | hosted | yes | the vendor shipped "Reflect Open" on 14 July 2026 and says new development happens there |
| Workflowy | first-party, desktop beta since 21 July 2026 | local, and the desktop app must stay open | no. Its seven tools cannot read or write notes at all. | not established |
| Tana Outliner | first-party | local, localhost:8262; a hosted beta exists on the paid plan |
not established | no |
| Anytype | official | local, 127.0.0.1:31009 |
not established | not established |
| Amplenote | first-party | local, 127.0.0.1 |
not established | Unlimited tier only |
| Obsidian | none official | community servers on a machine you keep on: inside the desktop app, as a local process, or on your own server | yes | the app is free; every MCP server is a community project |
| Apple Notes | community only | local, through AppleScript, macOS only | not established | free |
"Not established" means exactly that: it was not verifiable from the vendor's own documentation on 22 September 2026, and a guess dressed as a fact would make the rest of this table worth less. If you know one of these and it is wrong, write to kontakt@pyfio.com and it gets corrected with the date.
The two things worth pulling out
Workflowy's server cannot touch notes. Its seven tools reach the bullet text and not the grey text underneath, which is where most people keep the part an agent needs. Its own beta users said so in the thread. That is not a small gap; it is most of the content.
Most of these are local, and local means your laptop. Workflowy, Tana Outliner, Anytype, Amplenote and every Apple Notes bridge run on the machine in front of you. Notion, the new Tana, Craft, Capacities, Reflect and Pando are hosted.
How to tell, for any app, in about a minute
You do not have to take a table's word for it. A hosted MCP server is a URL, so ask it:
curl -s -o /dev/null -w '%{http_code}' -X POST https://the-url/mcp -H 'content-type: application/json' -d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"tools/list"}'
A hosted server that speaks the current protocol answers 401 with a
WWW-Authenticate header telling your client where to authenticate. If the setup
instructions give you a localhost address or tell you to keep an app running, it is
local, and no table is needed.
Where Pando sits
Pando is an outliner with a hosted MCP server. Your agent connects over OAuth, gets one bullet of your own outline as its persistent memory if you want one, and reaches your whole outline, read and write or read only, while your laptop is shut. One press in the app afterwards holds it to a single bullet you pick, and what is under it. It reads and writes notes, because a note is just another field.
It is free for 1,000 bullets with every feature included and no payment card, and agent access is not gated behind the paid plan and will not be. Pando does not pay for the tokens, so there is nothing to resell.
The honest part: Pando is younger than most of the table, it is built by one person, and it is hosted, which is the trade that makes it reachable from a phone. Who runs this, and how you get out says the rest without decoration.
